Your group has been assigned one of the categories shown here and will create a poster of information and present it to the class. The information on your poster will feature a compelling statement about the link and notes from each of you. You will be assessed on your contribution to the poster and your ability to explain the information to the class. To begin, click on the picture of your assigned topic and you will be taken to an introduction of the category. Now, look along the left margin. You will see additional links offering detailed information. Each group member should pick one link to investigate. Each member should keep his/her own notes and bullet the information on your group paper. Then, as a group, write a compelling statement about this entire link on your group paper. Be sure to use the title of your link in your compelling statement so we know what topic you were assigned. Some links are very short. If that is the case, do more than one or help someone who has an extensive link.

You will be watching a video on this jog. Stop the video and read the rest of this comment box before watching the video. Get your group together and watch the video on one computer. (That will keep the noise down in the classroom.) You may decide to complete the assignment together. Enlarge the video to full screen. This video is an interview with the director of the Holocaust Museum in Washington D.C.. She explains how the museum's special exhibit in recognition of it's 10th anniversary develops into an insightful and new view of Anne Frank: not as a victim of the Holocaust but as a budding writer. Listen for some of Anne's thoughts, ideals and fantasies. Write them down on your paper. You may need to stop and start the video a few times when you recognize ideas for your lists. Take your time and really listen to the director's explanation of Anne's writings. After completing this video activity, return to your own computer and continue to step three of the jog.

You have entered the website of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. This museum will be one of the most emotional visits on your Washington D.C. trip. Be careful not to get lost in this website: there are disturbing images and shocking videos. Go only where you are directed during class time. Get the required work finished and explore the website, if you desire later with your parents. Although where I am about to send you covers sad information, the images I have chosen are not shocking. Before the Frank family went into hiding, they were aware of the dangerous living conditions that threatened many people in Europe. Find "Holocaust History" along the left side of this web site. Below it, click on "Introduction to the Holocaust." Read the first four paragraphs of the article and click of the video map image along the right side of the article. A selection of maps will appear. Scroll to the bottoom and select the animated map of Europe. The transcript of the video will appear below the map. Keep a list of the groups of people and the countries affected by the Holocaust. Record your lists on your own paper. After completing your notes using the map, Find the links at the top of the page: Museum, Education, Research, History, Remembrance, and so on. Place your curser on "History", scroll to "Holocaust Encyclopedia" and click. Scroll down below the picture. Find the articles under the Subtitle "The Holocaust". Click on "Pogroms". Read the first paragraph and write down what the word pogroms means both literally and what it was commonly known to mean in Europe. In the third paragraph you'll find a link called "Kristallnacht". Click on it. What was Kristallnacht? Keep in mind that this happened in 1938. The Frank family would not go in hiding until 1942. In the caption of the picture of Herschel Grynszpan, "more photographs" are available. Click on it. Now, explore the pictures in order and complete a cause and effect graphic organizer.

By now, you should have a pretty good idea why the Frank family went into hiding. Get to know the people in the story. Write a note about each person on your own paper.

It's hard to believe how recently the story of Anne Frank really took place. Meip Gies, who helped hide the family, and who's story begins our study of Anne Frank, passed awayjust last February. There are several pictures in Meip's book, Anne Frank Remembered. You are welcome to look at that book at this time. Anne would be celebrating her 8ndt birthday this year.
